My diverse repertoire has been compiled based on the insightful advice given to me by one of the legends of Blues Music, Sam "Lightning" Hopkins, during a conversation and a few drinks we had in the 1970's.
I had complained to him about audiences talking while I was performing and Lightning listened, then looked at me and simply said, "Boy, if peoples are talking while you're playing, you're playing the wrong stuff".
At that moment, I decided to create a diverse repertoire from “Hit” songs made famous by multiple artists and song writers, including a few made famous by Lightning.
His lesson to me was succinct and I quickly learned that whether I’m entertaining or writing songs, it was important for me to make sure my audience was familiar with and interested in the songs I was singing or writing; and my goal was to do the best I could to insure that, at the close of my performance, I had a happy audience.
Before I begin a performance, keeping with the “Best Practices” of business, I consult with the venue’s owner, manager, or event coordinator, to insure that the music I select to play will be accepted by their customers and to discover if they prefer “Background” music or Entertainment Interaction with the audience.
Together we “Custom Build” my performance.
