Looking back at the recording technology I used to record my first music demo and comparing it with today's technology, is absolutely amazing.
My first demo session occurred in a small Texas radio station on a 1-2 track reel to reel recorder. I had aspirations to become a country star and a radio producer in Lake Charles, Louisiana had told me to send him a recording of my singing. The finished product was a very acceptable demo recording, which never went anywhere. I sent the one copy of my recording to the producer and never heard from him again.
But I did get my feet wet. That would have been in the middle 1960's. One of my friends recently reminded me that he made many commercial records in those days using a 4 track recording.
In the early 70's cassette recording became available, mono only. I quickly bought into the technology and started recording the songs I wrote. The outcomes continue to get better. In a year or two after mono cassette recording started, stereo cassette recorders were made available. Wonderful technology and the outcomes were spectacular.
In 1978 I headed for Nashville for my first studio recording, featuring what I believe was a 8 - 16 track outcome. The technology and outcomes were moving rapidly, which would bring us to now, digital recording can be done in home recording studios with outcomes that make the earlier devices obsolete.
With a small investment in microphones and computer programs, I now have the ability to create spectacular recordings in the convenience of my home.
I've started my own recording studio, Gentle Beast Records. It consists of the latest in neoteric computerized degital recording equipment. The recording outcomes are excellent and my completed products will be numerous.
